Review of House of Wax (1953) by Roy S — 21 Oct 2013
I think I last saw this as I have last seen most of my Vincent Price movies, as a child. I guess I was lucky, in that the horror movies available to children in the 70s were G-rated and if necessary edited for television and thus perfect for kids.
Alas the G- or even PG- rated horror movie is all but extinct, and even "edited for television" is now quite a different thing. Anyway, this is certainly one of Price's best. Not nearly as scary now that I am a jaded adult, but still quite entertaining.
Also as an adult I can appreciate the secret sexuality of these 50s films much more. Price seems to effortlessly exude creepiness, and perversion is not much of a leap. The 3D is fun, as is seeing Charles Bronson (as Igor, the most trusted name in horror henchmanship) so early in his career he was still going by his Jewish-sounding last name.
