Review of House of the Dead 2 (2006) by Jonathan Y — 20 Dec 2008
Aiming squarely at that 'deliberately stupid, gory fun' sweet spot that makes for a great beer party flick, 'HOTD2' is certainly an improvement over Uwe Boll's atrocious first attempt at bringing the zombie-blasting video game franchise to the big screen.
Unfortunately, merely being better than Boll is faint praise, and while Part 2 does feature some halfway competent directing, a few nicely done gore effects and some amusing winks at the audience, it's also hamstrung by terrible performances (which veer sharply between 'still kind of asleep' and 'I got this part because the casting director saw me in this awesome high school play I did'), a minimal budget that apparently didn't allow for much actual gunplay or explosions, and some of the clumsiest fight choreography this side of a drunken Steven Seagal.
Nice try, but still no dice.
