Review of House of Sand and Fog (2003) by Chéri Elaine P — 29 Jul 2011
This movie grips us from the very beginning, introducing us to characters we empathize with and respect, and are even fascinated by. As we learn more about the characters, we discover their subtle flaws, captured in themes of cultural misunderstanding/xenophobia, letting emotion get in the way of sound judgment, and rigid upholding of honor and loyalty.
Destruction sweeps us before we even know it, and a great tragedy is set in motion. I can overlook the rather over the top climatic tragic moment because it's probably necessary. What makes this movie memorable are the excellent performances by Jennifer Connelly and Ben Kingsley, and the use of cinematography and score, which altogether bring out the essence of perfect tragedy.
The director must have a keen sense of the human spirit, and I applaud him for creating a film that really shows us how fragile we are at the mercy of fate.
