Review of House of Sand and Fog (2003) by Michael V — 29 Mar 2012
"Fresh off of winning an Oscar for her performance Ã,Ã, in A Beautiful Mind a year before, Jennifer Connelly gives a great performance. Shohreh Aghdashloo who's one of the best Iranian actresses out there in hollywood is great.
It is Ben Kingsley (one of the best actors I have a pleasure of watching) who steals the show here as the bossy, protective Iranian Colonel father. You want to see Kingsley at his absolutely finest? Watch the last 20 minutes of the film, he blows you the hell away.
Deservingly got that Oscar nod and had Sean Penn's performance in Mystic River hadn't been great (which it was), Kingsley would have won easily. With a powerful score from Oscar-winning composer James Horner, House of Sand and Fog is a great movie to look at though it's depressing & sad towards the end, it's a powerful of a movie".
