Review of House of Sand and Fog (2003) by Cesar S — 29 Oct 2010
Poorly developed concept, but those tend to lead to compelling movies. Jennifer Connelly and Ron Eldard, are good in their performances but their characters are strongly dislikable and I lacked the pity I think I was supposed to feel for Connelly.
Ben Kingsley, on the other hand, displays his power over foreigner roles and his character, kudos to the screenwriter, is very likable, not to mention pitiful. Shorheh Aghdashloo, an actress I've never seen before or since, also gives a very memorable performance as Kingsley's wife.
Frances Fisher plays the annoying lawyer that often drags down screenplays, even though the character is often essential to the realism of the film. Pretty well directed, but not one of the most memorable films of the year, especially when compared to films like 'Pirates of the Caribbean', 'Lost in Translation', 'Matchstick Men', and 'Mystic RIver'.
B+.
