Review of House of Sand and Fog (2003) by Susie T — 15 Oct 2012
Spoiler alert for this review: despite the over-the-top ending, this film carried the cultural conflict really well, and parodied the American's way of looking at things. You could understand both points of view.
Particularly revealing were Ben Kingsley's character's words to his son about how the 'americans were like children, easily distracted, chasing after colourful things, they could not see a good opportunity when it presented it'.
This was accurate of the character's behaviour in the film. I found Connelly's character and her policeman 'squeeze' were irritating and weak. BUT I wasn't convinced by the son's actions towards the end, and also just how the whole thing panned out.
Was it necessary to have that ending? It did get me crying though. Maybe it's a call to 'grow up'??
