Review of House of Flying Daggers (2004) by Blackity B — 30 Apr 2009
Switched three genres by the end, but turned out a quite styling, beautiful and rather poignant film at the end. It starts out like a regular martial-arts movie, with a seemingly OK story and stunning fight scenes. Almost as good as Hero's in fact, the cinematography was. Then, for half and hour before the end it turns entirely into a romance story, which I threatened was really killing what had been a decent move up to that point. The ending, however, became a fairytale and was truly a breathtaking masterpiece. Really would have been a top-notch movie if they had infused more of this type of magic throughout its length.
B+.
