Review of House of Flying Daggers (2004) by Rick R — 30 Jan 2014
House of Flying Daggers (2004).
I enjoyed Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (2000). This is another Chinese martial arts movie from Yimou Zhang who gave us Hero (2002) using ultra colorful images, moody music, fantastic choreography, and romantic, star-crossed lovers. This is the perfect movie to see on HD or even in a theater.
The movie is so stunning to look at that it's hard to turn your eyes away to try to read the subtitles. The story gets a little complicated though.
The House of Flying Daggers is a secret organization of assassins that apposes the Tang dynasty government. Police captain Leo (Andy Lau) sends one of his officers, Jin (Takeshi Kaneshiro) to infiltrate this organization by breaking out a blind dancer, Xiao Mei (Ziyi Zhang) from jail who is the daughter of the former leader, and who is believed to know the new leader's identity.
Be prepared to see impossible feats of gravity defying movements along the lines of the Wuxia style fantasy genre. Just go with it. :-).
