Review of House of Dracula (1945) by Tommy P — 24 Jun 2008
A female hunchback? What next, gay cowboys?
Probably the first movie to try to explain lycanthropy and vampirism 'scientifically'. Apparently Dracula suffers from a rare blood disease and the Wolf Man has a combination of glandular malfunction and self-hypnosis. Pardon me, but I don't think a hyperactive pituitary can make a man turn into a wolf-man-hybrid within 30 seconds of exposure to moonlight, nor that a blood disorder could give a corpse the strength of ten men and the ability to turn into a bat. You can't explain the supernatural scientifically-- well, except for zombies (check out "The Serpent and the Rainbow" for more information).
Did this lay the foundations for UNDERWORLD? Well... probably not.
