Review of House of D (2004) by Alexandra S — 09 Aug 2007
David Duchovny wrote and directed two episodes of The X-Files, one of which I loved, and one of which I found overly sentimental. My response to this film is a combination of both those reactions. House of D works brilliantly in some spots, is over-explained and just shy of saccharine in others, but the final result is an emotional, moving film that clearly was a story told from Duchovny's heart.
The performances are good, and a few of the shots are brilliant (Anton Yelchin's tears drippng onto the camera, for instance.) I could have done without the weird teeth Robin Williams was wearing--very distracting--but Duchovny's super-hot goatee made up for that aesthetic issue.
Holy-moly, David, come visit the House of A, instead!
