Review of House of 1000 Corpses (2003) by Eden R — 01 Sep 2011
Every now and again I dig around in the horror exploitation genre and its not pleasant but it often foreshadows satire and editing techniques well before the mainstream. The plot apart from the usual teenagers who drive to the wrong house is incoherent and there is no real explanation of motivations or even how these butcherers have not been investigated but thats not why I watched the film.
I was curious if Zombie would do anything different and he did. There is a garish buzz to this film and considering it was made in 2000 (couldn't get a release for three years) there is something to the way Zombie puts his montages together with a grinding stripper soundtrack. It is an obvious foreshadow to a revisiting of Southern Gothic as shown in True Blood.
The acting from Haig and Rainn is not bad and Sheri Moon Zombie though one note is convincing as bat shit crazy.
Unless a real genre fan, steer clear this is not fun viewing.
