Review of House of 1000 Corpses (2003) by Joe A — 01 Oct 2011
Zombie's first film is a throwback to the grindhouse style flicks like the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It's a faithful homage and Zombie shows some potential but, the film is never really scary, suspenseful or shocking enough to truely be emulate the films it's inspired by.
It only gets interesting and original during the surreal final act when it turns into a sort of dark Alice in Wonderland. The nightmarish visuals here are Zombie's strong point and he doesn't evoke them enough in his first feature.
A fun tribute to a type of horror they don't make anymore but, nothing groundbreaking. Still beats the endless generic horror remakes that saturate the genre right now.
