Review of House of 1000 Corpses (2003) by James C — 23 Jun 2014
"MEET THE FIREFLY FAMILY".
- 'House of 1000 Corpses' is a 2003 horror flick written and directed by Rob Zombie (Halloween remakes, The Lords of Salem). Zombie drew his inspiration from horror classics like 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' and 'The Hills Have Eyes'. The storyline covers every aspects of the genre; a group of teens get car trouble in a desolated area and end up with a sadistic inbred family. The usage of different techniques (lighting, the flashes,...) give the movie a weird feeling. To my opinion too much senseless and bizarre plot twists occur (the childish ritual burial, the horrible creatures in the tunnels). I did like the long awkward silence before the cop gets killed. A bunch of weird characters try to make a statement, but the only one I'm a fan of is Captain Spalding, played by Sid Haig (Foxy Brown, Hatchet 3). With Bill Moseley (Texas Chainsaw, Army of Darkness) and Sheri Moon Zombie (The Lords of Salem, Halloween remake). A sequel quickly followed. Ready to meet the Firefly family?
A group of teens are travelling around the country in search of strange roadway attractions. They pull over at the nearest gas station and are surprised to find a museum of oddities owned by the clownish Captain Spalding (Haig). They take a tour and learn more about some of America's most notorious serial killers. One of them is local legend Dr. Satan. The boys get obsessed by the idea to find the exact place where this maniac was hung from a tree and so they begin their search. Along the way, the four teens pick up the beautiful but odd Baby (Moon Zombie), who was hitchhiking. When the car gets a flat tire, Baby offers them to come to her house where they can wait while her brother can mend the vehicle. Once inside the house, the teenagers meet the Firefly family; a bunch of sadistic killers led by Otis (Moseley) who don't have the intention to let them leave. Who will survive the massacre?
