Review of House of 1000 Corpses (2003) by Lee R — 18 Oct 2009
Rob Zombie makes the leap from Metal musician to Film Director with House of 1000 Corpses. A Film about a bunch of kids who while making there way across america writing a book on weird road side attractions find themselves at the mercy of a bunch of inbred, hillbilly, trash, psychopaths.
While this is no bad movie, its very apparent that this is a debut feature for a director who is basically indulging all his favorite types of horror movie. The Dialogue and characterisation is proberbly the movies greatest strengths.
The Character of Captain Spaulding (the psychotic clown) played brilliantly by Sid Haig is an instant classic horror icon. American Pies Karen Black is great also as the looney Mother Firefly and Bill Moseley does his Foul mouthed red neck scumbag routine as well as he ever does.
Its also pretty cool to see The Offices Dwight (Rainn Wilson being murdered. The week link, as always in a Rob Zombie movie though is Sherri Moon. She is surely only ever cast because she's totally hot, because she can't act her way out of a paper bag.
The gore is pretty well handled and funny and nasty in equal measures. The film goes abit overly strange and stupid once the heroine wanders into the underground lair of Dr Satan when the whole film seems to change from a psycho movie to a film featuring the undead.
Still this seems like nitpicking when this is already a gleefully silly film that while not be high art is very entertaining.
