Review of House at the End of the Street (2012) by Miranda S — 23 Jun 2013
A mediocre psychological horror film that is nearly incomprehensible but somewhat salvaged. Nothing really special here, though it tries to be something interesting. Jennifer Lawrence does the best she can with the material while the other actors sort of sleepwalk throughout the film.
A few moments are effective in grabbing your attention, particularly that crazy plot twist (but I saw that coming). The visual look is easily the best part of the film, with picturesque small-town scenery and a nice house with a creepy, dingy basement.
But otherwise, most of the film is dulled and marred by generic direction, stilted writing, far-fetched plotting, and a mountain of clichés. Doesn't measure up to Hitchcock's standards. It's decent for the teenage crowd and fans of Lawrence, but not for everybody else.
