Review of Hotel Transylvania (2012) by Ben L — 21 Oct 2015
My wife has a higher tolerance for silly kids entertainment than I do, so I was already nervous when she said this was a good movie and I should watch it. Luckily I caught it for free on TV, so I didn't pay for the experience.
It's not that Hotel Transylvania is a straight-up lousy movie, it probably would be superb for the target audience. Sadly, I'm not the target audience. A kid might actually find the story of an overprotective father lying to his daughter to shield her from the dangers of the outside world to be new and exciting, but I've seen it all before so it was tedious.
A kid might laugh hysterically at a classic fart gag, but I'm kind of past that stage unless it's really unique. There is nothing original or interesting in this movie, not in its premise or its presentation.
Then there's the horrible accent work from Adam Sandler, which makes every word he says as Dracula worthy of an eye roll. I can't say Hotel Transylvania is a terrible movie, it's just unnecessary.
It doesn't help that I am not a Halloween fan, and don't care at all about classic movie monsters. I'm sure some families will adore this movie, and clearly they did if it earned a sequel, but I would suggest looking at better kids movies first.
