Review of Hotel Rwanda (2004) by Gavin S — 07 Sep 2012
First off, how did Don Cheadle lose the Oscar to Jamie Foxx? Secondly, a powerful moving film, even more so when you remember hearing about the Rwandan Genocide on the news at 13-14yrs old. The story of Paul Rusesabagina, manager of a posh hotel in Kigali, who ends up sheltering and saving 1200+ Hutus and Tutsis from being massacred.
Cheadle is magnificent as the man who's barely flappable, yet maintains a great sense of humanity. Nick Nolte's character (a composite/stand-in for Canadian Romeo Dallaire) shows the frustration of being stuck there but unable to do anything to stop the slaughter.
It's somewhat heartening to know that Dallaire, with his meagre UN peacekeeping force was able to save over 30,000 lives. If nothing else, an important film for people to see, be educated, and never forget.
A tale of humanity on a small scale winning out over inhumanity on a large scale.
