Review of Hotel Artemis (2018) by Wayne K — 15 Aug 2018
Certainly an interesting movie, well-acted and with striking cinematography, Hotel Artemis has failed to find an audience. I'd say I enjoyed it more than most people did, but still don't consider it a great film.
The plot takes many random digressions, and there's a lot of plot strands flowing through it that don't always have satisfying conclusions, and Charlie Day, the yammering idiot from Horrible Bosses, is back playing, once again, a yammering idiot.
But for good measure, he's now a a smug sexist, just in case you were in danger of actually liking him this time. I liked Jodie Foster and Dave Bautista, with the latter proving that he's more than a one-hit wonder in Guardians Of The Galaxy, and the former making a long-awaited return to the big screen.
They're the best and most entertaining players in the film. At least until Jeff Goldblum turns up, playing, let's be honest, Jeff Goldblum. It has some great scenes, some nice character moments and a very anarchic atmosphere, compounded by the tight confines in which much of the film takes place.
I would watch it again, but it's not the kind of movie I would take to the rooftops and shout about.
