Review of Hot Summer Nights (2018) by Veronica R — 28 Jul 2018
There was a line in this movie that Chalamet's character Daniel said, something like: "Sending me off for the Summer. What a cliché." Little did I expect the screenwriters to end up choosing the perfect one-word to describe their movie: "cliché.
" And this film doesn't surpass cliché neither. The plot is yawn-worthy, and the lines are even worse. I don't blame the actors; it's just incredibly mediocre writing. The unnatural dialogue, the overly done narration, and an overall lackadaisical way of storytelling: I think this story would have worked better in a book for teenagers.
It does not work in a movie, or at least, in this movie. Or perhaps it's simply just bad. I will say, however, I do appreciate the effort; but it didn't work.
