Review of Hot Rod (2007) by Kim S — 28 May 2010
Hot Rod is silly, hilarious and just perfect at every turn. Don't go into it thinking it will be this wonderfully dramatic film, it's not. What it is, is 88 minutes of pure comic gold. The story is paced incredibly well, the jokes are unexpected and feel fresh and the characters are incredibly well drawn.
Andy Samberg is the lovable loser who doesn't know he's a loser. Jorma Taccone plays his admiring kid brother, who's actually in his mid-20s. Bill Hader is brilliant as always. Seriously, guys, he's probably the greatest character actor of our time (Have you seen his impression of Edgar Wright?).
And Danny McBride is Danny McBride, but I have no problem with that. Dude's found a niche and he's filled it to capacity. It's stupidly hilarious, but smart in its stupidity (if that makes any sense) and opens up a whole new world of what you can do with a film (see: "Cool Beans").
If you're a fan of The Lonely Island or just the new guard of SNL, you will love this movie. It makes me feel as if all is right with the world.
