Review of Hot Rod (1950) by Sol H — 07 Jun 2010
Very stupid but very in-line with the more low-brow side of my sense of humour. The cast help to sell it, all being B-listers but if they're B-listers like Andy Samberg, Bill Hader and Will Arnett, who cares? Nothing in the film is great except that it is very charming in its overall weirdness. Only a handful of the jokes actually work, but the ones that don't still have a strange quality that leave you appreciating them for trying. Maybe it's just me; like I said, it felt as if it was written by someone with my exact same sense of humour -just that they only just had time to bash out one draft of the script.
So yeah, it's a fairly simple, slapstick comedy and one that relies completely on the comedy (you're not going to care about the plot in the slightest) but it just about gets away with it.
Personal enjoyment: 6/10.
Actual quality as a film: 5/10.
