Review of Hot Pursuit (2015) by Malo F — 19 May 2015

Hot Pursuit is quite definitely one of the worst films of the year and quite possibly one of the worst films I've ever seen. Female driven comedies are usually hysterical bids of crude humor and give an empowering nature to female leads, and Hot Pursuit is neither.

It is adamant in its portrayal as a hardcode female driven film where there are very few men, which isn't my problem here. If anything, that is awesome. I just wish the idea that was concocted up in pre-production translated well to film.

It doesn't...not by a long shot. Reese Witherspoon, while not my favorite actress, has given us some really good stuff over the years. With this film, it is so poorly written and directed, it is any wonder how the hell this got made.

And it is baffling that Witherspoon would pick such a tasteless, moronic, idiotic, and overly feminist project to do. Witherspoon is not good in this film; she sleep walks through her scenes and tries too hard to be funny which makes her look more like an amateur than anyone could ever believe.

Sofia Vergara is poison to the ears in this film. Her ridiculous and stereotypical portrayal of Latin women is so overdone and insulting that I can't imagine the director getting away unscathed out of this.

Which brings me to the worst and weakest link of this film...director Anne Fletcher. Fletcher directs this film with not an ounce of flare or creativity to set this film apart from the rest of the buddy comedies out there.

The scenes of "funny" banter back and forth between Vergara and Witherspoon feel like they are struggling to improve anything noteworthy. These are scenes that should have been left on the cutting room floor.

If it wasn't for the already short 87 minute runtime and the painfully frequent use of these types of banter, Fletcher could have walked away from this with an actual good film. Instead, Hot Pursuit is idiotic and overtly offensive to Latin women.

I couldn't recommend this film, it is seriously THAT bad.
