Review of Hot Pepper (1973) by Spencer S — 30 Dec 2015
Les Blank created a series of documentary shorts on the word of Zydeko in the Creole community. The figures that he chooses generally work as musicians in traditional genres, and his shorts are both educational in their scope and entertaining.
The subjects of this film are hilarious in their verbage, real in their depiction, and truly seeming one of a kind. This film is available through the Criterion Collection and on Hulu. Most of Blank's work is seen there, and for good measure.
