Review of Hot Fuzz (2007) by Kenneth B — 18 May 2013

Cornetto: Part Deux is one of my favourite comedies of the past ten years, it might be even top that list. The cast is impeccable, from the Pegg/Frost pairing through Broadbent, Considine, Colman and a tremendous turn from Timothy Dalton as the 'slasher...of prices', Simon Skinner. This isn't like one of those Frat-Pack comedies where Will Ferrell enlists all of his friends for no good reason, in Hot Fuzz everyone brings something.

The plot is delightfully absurd but it is also intricate and holds up to repeat viewings, in fact I think this is the fifth time I've seen Hot Fuzz and I still notice new things, whether they are sight-gags or plot points. The story progresses from inconspicuous comedy to all out action, via The Wicker Man but it never loses any momentum or credibility. The action scenes are as good as, if not better than, most straight action films and the laughs continue throughout. Like the best modern comedies, such as The Big Lebowski, this is endlessly quotable and endlessly rewatchable. In short, Hot Fuzz is 'off the f*cking chain'.
