Review of Hot Fuzz (2007) by Jakob P — 26 Aug 2013

This film is by far one of the best comedy movies out there. Taking the stereotyped buddy cop movie, it not only satirizes it but also rises above that as its own form of comedy. Providing a legitimate story of a highly efficient, yet social withdrawn, city cop who is plunged into a supposedly sleepy village, this film follows how he struggles with whether or not the high accident rate of the village is just that or due to secret crime.

The Comedy centers around how he has to deal with a sleepy police team, mundane civil duties, and the quantities of small town life. Also, the comedy itself is witty and does not rely on simple slapstick jokes to sustain it.

Importantly, the comedy is built around the story, rather than the story facilitating jokes that had been thought up without context. The story, while it is being presented bit-by-bit and viewed as a whole from the end is well thought out and fulfilling.

The characters in this film, unlike many other shallow comedies being put out today, have their own personalities and motives, some of which presenting the audience with moments that rise above the comedy just enough to not kill the comedic tone yet still elicit concern and other emotions from the audience.

Finally, the film's action packed finale will please without fail. I cannot find a single issue with this film and it is not lacking in any way. I find that its only limitation from greatness on the stage of film history is that its scope is kept small and due to being a comedy does not possess the serious issues or drama that other films can field.

Overall, I give this film a 10/10 in the comedy genre and a 9/10 amongst films across all genres.
