Hostiles doesn't offer you a simple explanation of how its culture and people worked, by telling a brutally honest story in which both sides don't really come off as sympathetic. Especially Christian Bale gives a nuance performance, for a character that you never fully get to understand what he his awful past was like, even though you know it wasn't pretty.
