Review of Hostiles (2017) by Max H — 26 Feb 2018
Sorry, this movie is not very good. It has a lot of potentially very good elements and even potentially classic elements - twisting genre tropes to better reflect modern views, real musing on the meaning of death in the wild west where death is common, a story that looks at the cause of racism and the solution.
But this movie only engages with these subjects on a very superficial level and instead we get a half baked movie that is very clean and nice to look at but also kind of boring. Christian Bale is as good as he always is - this time playing a character that only shows emotion in the toughest of circumstances.
He's one of the greatest actors of our time. Rosamund Pike, however, finds herself unfortunately typecast as her character in Gone Girl for the first half of the movie and by the movies second half its already too late.
The native americans are given about as much depth as native americans are typically given in film, which is not very much. The reason this is a two and not a two and a half or even a three is because this had soooo much potential and it just blew it.
