Review of Hostiles (2017) by Nate L — 16 Sep 2017
I was lucky to have seen this in the Telluride traveling festival at Dartmouth College. The cinematography is beautiful and unpretentious, making use of natural light and changing from the stark landscapes of the southwest to the lush greens of the northern rockies.
The performances are intense, but nuanced. Yes, there are some genre specific elements to Hostiles, but that is why we call them genres. However, the positive things that stand out in this film far outweigh any reliance on some stereotypical western themes.
It is an emotional gut punch, but I would welcome it again and again.
