Review of Hostiles (2017) by James M — 26 Jan 2018
The movie does what horror movies often do, and that is rely on extremely stupid characters to make a scene. Well, at least that is how the movie starts when a group of rogue Indians attack a settler and his family. You have to wonder how that settler survived so long. You wonder if that is how he hunted, by leaving cover and a firing platform and running at deer while shooting his rifle wildly while running at the herd? And, then his wife instead of running away stays close by with her children and screams and draws attention to herself before finally running away too late. A very annoying scene, in fact, quite grating.
The good - Christian Bale's performance was top notch.
The bad - the movie kept imposing 21st century sensitivities (the white man has stolen the red man's land) on 19th century characters. It would have been okay once, but multiple times became a distraction.
My only regret is I didn't wait for the movie to come to TV before seeing it.
