Review of Hostel: Part II (2007) by Matthew M — 10 May 2010
Is there a golden rule in filmaking that says a sequel has to suck? This movie was a disappointment. We all knew what was going to happen, that it was going to be a replay of the first movie. But that was not the problem.
The movie just dead ended and didn't make sense at all. All of a sudden the heroine turned into a cold bitch and the hero of the movie was, ta da, maybe par for our sick times, MONEY! All the goodwill developed for the characters went out the window with the inexplicable switch of the good guy Stuart to being the psychopath and then the nice girl Beth buying into the game to save her ass.
These two abandonments of character destroyed the potential emotional involvement and the film ended as if hitting a brick wall, with that stupid vengeance killing. Like the arch villain guy wouldn't hunt down and kill Beth instantly for that.
It was just handled timidly by the director. He seemed to just want to make his sequel and go home. Too many stupid things in the film to mention them all. The opening beheading was ridiculous. Neither campy funny, nor believably scary.
This film failed at every turn.
