Review of Hostel: Part II (2007) by Kellen V — 27 Jul 2010
Eli Roth decided to make Hostel: Part II to show the inner workings of the group responsible for the mayhem of the first film. I remember when I first heard about the idea I was pretty excited, however, Roth doesn't really got that deep into it.
He just shows us a scene with some rich fellows bidding on the tourist the wish to mutilate/kill. I was really hoping that he would study the group more than he did. I don't mind the death/kill scenes like some people, obviously if you seen the first film or if you know the films that inspired the hostel series than you will know that there would be gore/blood.
It was nice that Roth chose to tie in the part about Jay Hernandez getting caught by the hostel group. Also, it was pretty cool to see that Roth chose to cast Heather Matarazzo of 'Welcome to the Dollhouse' fame.
However, the films slow pacing just doesn't work in its favor, also I think that Lauren German was miscast as Beth(just my opinion). It's clear from all his efforts though that Roth does have a extreme passion for the horror genre, and certainly has numerous insperations to draw from I just think that this time it didn't pan out.
It might've been because Hostel 1 was still fresh in my mind, who knows?
