Review of Hostel (2011) by Allison C — 05 Jan 2011
I am slightly disheartened that so many people write this movie off without even giving it a chance. Only Roth has the cajones to make a movie this imaginative and outrageous. I give him major props for that.
Roth does a tremendous job of building tension in this film, particularly the scenes leading up to Paxton's...dilemma, I should say. Granted it is not a movie for the weak of stomach, all in all, it is certainly a movie worth notice. It is somewhat unfortunate that the horror industry feels the need to move further away from mystery and thrills and move more toward gore and sex. However, this was not a terrible flick by any means. The ending scene is particularly satisfying, in terms of revenge. Although you may be squirming in your chair half the time, the ending will leave you applauding.
