Review of Hostel (2011) by Erotic . — 18 Jul 2012
Review: Hostel.
Title: Hostel.
Year: 2006.
Cast: Jay Hernandez, Derek Richardson.
MPAA: Unrated.
My Rating: 4 Stars (out of fiive).
PLOT: A few American homies go backpacking into the land of our Euro brothers to study thier culture and get in touch with thier more eloquent side (just kidding, they're looking for hot chicks to get laid and weed to smoke). They hit a hostel in Slovakia where they meet some strange folks, and strange thing start to happen. Rev that chainsaw, this is where the fun starts!
REVIEW: I wasn't really blown over by Eli Roth's debut film, Cabin Fever, but I have been anxious to see this movie for some time, seeing the rave reviwes and the fact that Quentin Tarantino pasted his lovely name all over this puppy. Well, was I dissapointed? NAH! This one went all out on suspensful moments, gory surprises, and a final 10 minutes that had me cheering at my TV screen. Roth, you crazy, sick bastard! I love you! This was deinitley a "guy movie", as there's more female nudity and over the top violence in here than any other flick I've seen all year, and that is a joyous thing. The actors all handled thier shite well, you could tell they were all having a good time here, as was I.
Now, for the wet side of the noodle. The trailers made this out to be a terrifying, nail-biting experience. Well, it wasn't. It didn't even try to be scary! It was too tounge-in-cheek and over the top to really have much of an effect on me. Call me jaded from all the gore flicks I've seen over the years, but this one needed some more tension in my useless opinion. The story also ranged from "believeable" to "bullshit" where convenient plot twists were the norm. What are the chances of bumping into everybody you know just by walking down the road? I guess Slovakia's smaller than my backyard! Weird.
Overall, Hostel delivered in it's twisted department, with plenty of nasty surprises and chuckles to deliver. It could have been more scary, and a bit more gore would have been nice, but I got what I got and I liked what I got! I'm NEVER going to Slovakia!
GORE: 10/10 Of course, I checked out the uncut version, and it was loaded with the gore.... fun with scalpels, fun with chainsaws, fun with hammers and various tools, people hit by cars, trains, brief torture sequences and the infamous "eye scene" that was so gross it had me laughing out loud. More graphic torture scenes would have made it all more intense, but I guess I'm jaded by now.
LAUGHS: 6/10 Although the humor is not in-your-face, Roth gave us movie buffs a lot of winks and nods, especially with those over-the-top sequences. And of course, the eye scene will make you laugh, if you need therapy. I think the guys might laugh more than the ladies, who might get pissed at how nasty it all is....
