Review of Hostel (2011) by Chris R — 13 Sep 2012
Hostel is very brutal, and not only that it loves itself for being brutal, maybe a bit too much at times. The humor of 'Cabin Fever' is gone, in its place a very nasty film. However, looking past the gore the film has something to teach you.
The American tourists become a part of this situation due to the ignorance and intolerance people still carry with them and surprisingly this is a very important message and it's strange to see it come from a film like this.
This puts 'Hostel' above other torture films of its time and actually makes the film more enjoyable. The downside to this lesson of being tolerant makes the main characters very unlikeable human beings.
They are rude, insensitive and loudmouthed and when they get a punishment, it's very hard to feel bad for them. The film is not a bad film at all however, in fact it is one of the better horror films of the modern age.
Its lack of subtlety will alienate everyone but genre fans from it however, taking the film down a notch.
