Review of Hostel (2011) by Jacob F — 14 Aug 2013
I will say that the film does succeed in delivering some suspense, and the torture scenes feature convincing special effects. However, I find the protagonists too underdeveloped to care much for. The underdevelopment also holds true for the villains as they give no real or good reason as to why it is they do what they do.
Granted, I've heard that there really was a place where people pay to torture. However, I would argue that they should at least give them an interesting story to make them more fascinating. Also, the first portion of the film was a wholesale pornography show which grows tedious and simply unnecessary.
One of the biggest flaws is that the climax was ultimately too rushed. Overall, Hostel does have some good qualities but it is too underdeveloped and pointless for me to recommend.
