Review of Hostel (2011) by Dov D — 30 Apr 2014
I'm surprised that Quentin Tarantino had anything to do with these films since they're such a blatant rip-off of the Saw franchise, but regardless, Eli Roth's vision for this film is incredible and his social commentary clear and well presented.
.. It's a relatively slow moving movie, which is unusual for a Hollywood-style horror flick, but works in it's favor for building suspense, creating an appropriate atmosphere, and not overplaying his gruesome-violence hand.
Where this movie goes wrong is in it's presentation. The story is fairly choppy and just doesn't flow well. Additionally, the acting is definitely not where it should be. When I said that this is a rip-off of the Saw franchise, I meant that in the most positive way possible.
The Saw films are universally terrible and pointless; however, the Hostel movies have an interesting narrative mixed in with the gut-wrenching brutality. Bottom line, whis may not be my favorite of horror films, but I can't help but applaud Roth's vision.
Most horror fans will love it.
