Review of Hostel (2006) by Benjamin C — 28 Nov 2010
Hostel is a fascinating look into why censorship laws are upheld in certain areas of the world. Unlike what many would assume, this film does have a quite interesting plot. Sadly, Eli Roth tries to over-sell his story with the almost pornographic use of gore.
It is obvious there is absolutely no Hitchcock-inspired cinematography involved in Hostel. During slasher-esque sequences where most directors would cut a shot away from a fatal blow, Roth insists on showing brutally explicit closeups in order to upset the stomachs of viewers.
