Review of Hostel (2006) by Marv C — 12 Jul 2013

I was impacted by this movie, not because it was very good but I don't know why it made me think so much. Oli was tortured to death and he had a six-year-old... the story is a bit rough. This film have great characters, the problem is they are a bit loveable, you care about them which is a bit heartbreaking. I didn't enjoy the film so much.

Paxton, Josh and Oli are some tourists who basically want sex, but they fall in the trap of some kind of society who likes to torture people.

The effects are very good, they have some good head replicas and there's a lot of blood, if you like to watch a lot gore you're probably going to love the movie, as everyone knows this is a picture about torture I wouldn't call this horror, it's like torture-porn. There's a lot of nude scenes, some sex scenes, if you can't stand that kind of scenes then you're going to have some awkward minutes.

I was very impressed with the performances and the story, in my opinion it was very well written, it's quite stressing because you care about the characters some times, Hostel is one of the few movies where it explains that the people involved in the story are not ragdolls, they're human beings... poor people.

Like I said before, Hostel is not a horror film. Don't expect to scared by the film, don't even expect jump-scares because is not that kind of movie. The film has blood but it's not very explicit, of course it has some flesh, vomit and blood but some of the torture scenes are implicit. Is not very visual, actually Hostel is very psychological, you have some of the torture but you have the chance to imagine and feel some of their pain.

Hostel doesn't have bad dialog, everything is very interesting, and in the end everything connects, that was great. However, like I said above... I didn't enjoy the film too much, but good job, Eli Roth, Hostel is well made.
