Review of Horsemen (2009) by Patrick T — 11 Apr 2012
Horsemen is a pretty average film to be honest. Whilst I enjoy plots that revolve around the Apocalypse or the 4 Horsemen, I donâ(TM)t think this was a good version of it. The plot has murders committed by 4 humans, with each murder having colors related to the color of the Horseman, i.e. red for War. These crimes are investigated by Dennis Quaidâ(TM)s Detective, who lost his wife to cancer three years before and is estranged from 2 sons, one teenager and the other younger.
The idea of four humans portraying themselves as the Horsemen and getting revenge through it was interesting, but they unfortunately seemed to gloss over almost all 3, only War really got a lot of screen time as a villain, Death was a twist at the end that just felt off slightly to me, and the other two were barely important. If they were gonna use this, I feel they should have built up the villains better, to make them actually fearful.
Now Quaid is a good actor, he actually carries the film, his distracted and messy detective very believable, Quaidâ(TM)s body language symbolizing his distractions. However it also meant unfortunately his side was give TOO MUCH look at, and whilst he played it well, at times it was a little boring, more time was needed building the villains.
The film is nothing special, very average all round, in its direction, writing, and performances. Quaid gives his best but it was always going to be a B-Movie at best. Watch it if bored, no other reason.
