Review of Horns (2013) by Jordan R — 05 Sep 2013
A scruffy Daniel Radcliffe inexplicably starts growing horns out of his skull after his girlfriend turns up dead. While the script of this supernatural murder mystery / love story ultimately can't keep up with the cleverness of the concept, this adaptation of the Joe Hill novel still has a lot going for it.
For starters it is just gorgeously filmed, with wonderfully atmospheric British Columbia settings ranging from lush forests to smoky jazz clubs; it is truly accomplished filmmaking. The soundtrack, similarly, just draws you in, and Radcliffe makes an admirable (if perhaps not entirely successful) attempt to get you to forget about Harry Potter.
It's too bad this lovely balance is upset in the last third of the movie with over-the-top gore and an underwhelming resolution to the mystery.
