Review of Horns (2013) by Orlando O — 14 Jan 2015
Horns is an interesting fantasy thriller that has a supernatural element with a murder mystery tone. The movie was entertaining but it does have some problems from a deep change in tone to a sloppy pacing that feels like the movie is longer than it needed to be.
Director Alexandre Aja does make an entertaining fun horror movies from his earlier work of The Hill Have Eyes remake. This time, he does tone down the graphic violence to focus on a supernatural thriller as Daniel Radcliffe's character Ig forms horns that gives him devlish powers. He can reveal anybody that comes around him to show there hidden secret desires that can be from food, sex, backstapping truth, and even thoughts of murder. He is also able to foresee within the persons past that he uses to try to put the pieces together from his girlfriend that was murdered. The movie does become tacky when it does become awkwardly comical when we see his powers revealing peoples outburst. The tone shifts around from that cheesy moments to being dark.
Ig Perrish girlfriend Merrin (Juno Temple) was raped and murder leaving him the assumed suspect from the local town. Ig soon discovers he has horns growing and he has the supernatural powers that can reveal peoples deep secret. Ig tries to solve the murder on his girlfriends death to help clear his name and avenge her death.
The movie does fail when it comes to the pacing. It slows down gradually when Ig experiences flashbacks to his childhood and meeting Merrin for the first time. It feels like a Stephen King movie of present story with subplots of the characters past. Horns is a fair film, it does have its marks on being fun but gradually changes to a serious turn which is not a bad thing.
