Review of Horns (2013) by Ben T — 19 Mar 2015
Ever since the Harry Potter franchise ended it seems like Daniel Radcliffe has been trying to somewhat change his image by staring in much darker movies to the ones we usually associate with him. Of the post Harry Potter films Radcliffe has done I would probably say Horns is his best performance however that doesn't make it a perfect film.
Because at the end of the day Horns is a mixed bag which is actually a really big shame as to be honest I was quite excited for this film. Horns is a dark, twisted, somewhat funny revenge horror movie with a lot of good but a lot of bad.
One of the best things about the film is the acting, as I said earlier Daniel Radcliffe is truly great in the film as is Juno Temple even though she doesn't have all that much to do. The film looks brilliant, the cinematography is excellent and the director added in lots of great atmosphere.
The film also has some very funny scenes, like the ones where everyone starts confessing their inner secrets to Ig. The film also has some very messed up scenes, especially some of the murder scenes towards the end of the film.
There's also a hallucination scene that is genuinely scary. However there are quite a few bad elements, for example even though the two leads are great some of the other acting is really wooden, especially Ig's best friend.
The cgi is also really questionable at time especially the demon at the end of the film. Also if you have a fear of snakes don't watch this film, there's a kill towards the end involving a snake entering someone's body that had me horrified.
The scene with the child actors goes on way to long in my opinion and made the film drag. Also the finale I found was a bit weak. However flaws aside the film is rather entertaining and has some great acting and horror.
Overall if you are a fan of the horror genre like I am then there's a lot to like. B-.
