Review of Hope Springs (2012) by Karen H — 27 Nov 2012
Meryl is good, especially in the beginning. Tommy Lee Jones is terrific in the second half. What I have a huge problem with is the script - it's simply unappealing and it circles a lot. I saw the same scene again and again with little tiny differences.
And in the end I simply didn't care. The formula wasn't overcome. It remained the formula. Too bad the actors were good when the script and the direction weren't that concerned with character.
. When I think of a good old-fashioned comedy about love over 50 or 60, I think of Something's Gotta Give. Again sugary polished looks that are rather off-putting but it had heart and a story. This one aspires to in the beginning and then doesn't know where to go.
