Review of Hope Springs (2012) by Marilee A — 30 Mar 2013
I feel embarrassed for Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones, getting involved in an essentially empty project like this. They seem hostile to the material, as well they should be. It's more banal than your average television marital soap opera.
Just the usual trite "we never touch each other" schtick. I mean, who wants to sit through the replay of the dreariness of a collapsed middle class marriage? In the film, they consult marriage counselor Steve Carell (oy) for some therapy, and get the usual cliches.
Streep is open to it, Tommy Lee not. "Well honey, couldn't we just sort of try this?" I was truly embarrassed at how bad this was. Why would actors of this caliber agree to a project like this? Do they even bother to read the scripts?
