Review of Hope Floats (1998) by David A — 06 May 2010
(from The Watermark 06/11/98).
Whatever happened to the snotty Prom Queen? Well, in this case, she's gotten dumped by her husband on national television, and must haul her daughter (Whitman) back to Smithville, Texas to live with her eccentric mother (Rowlands). There she meets old high school love-interest Connick, and must once again find the fire inside of her that she lost during her picture-perfect marriage. Not quite a knock-your-socks-off premise, but it's all in the execution. A smart script, excellent performances by Rowlands and Whitman (a startlingly strong young actress), and an uncharacteristically dimensional turn on the part of Bullock make this romance-by-numbers intelligent and ultimately successful. Queer Quotient: Hunky Connick is looking better than ever. And Rowlands cares for a quirky grandson who always appears in various costumes. Easily a future queen in-the-making.
