Review of Hoot (2006) by Cam C — 31 Jan 2008
You know what? I am highly embarrassed to admit liking this film and I'm not entirely sure why.
On it's surface it's a rather formulaic kids film. We all know Roy, the new kid will struggle at first to fit in. We know he will gain friends uniting for the cause of saving the baby owls and the evil corporation head will get his in the end.
But you know as mediocre the acting is, the kids are actually quite likable. Logan Lerman doesn't really have much to do with the role, and Cody Linley plays the wild boy well enough to leave us scratching our heads at what his story is? Brie Larson is pretty funny as the soccer jock and all 3 look relatively relaxed with each other.
Perhaps one of the more interesting aspects of this film is the relationship between the main leads. In the case of Roy and Beatrice there is little-to no romantic interest. O.o *shock horror* And from my observations (and quite a few others I understand) there seems to be a lot more suggested between the two boys, Roy and Mulletfingers.
Even if the (almost rampant) homosexual subtext was, in my opinion, completely unintentional, it still made for a refreshing and interesting perspective on the characters.
