Review of Hoop Dreams (1994) by Collin B — 01 Feb 2008
I'm on a documentary kick lately and this is my favorite documentary film ever. And it's not just a great doc, but a great movie period. 85% of Flixster not interested? Their loss.
With the Academy Awards looming over all of our heads right now, I also figured that it would be timely to point out one of the biggest blunders in Academy history: the omission of this film from the 1995 Best Documentary category. Everybody knew it was a joke back then, and everybody who's in the know is still angry about it. There's a fascinating segment on the Criterion release of the DVD with Siskel and Ebert tracking the film's acclaim and eventual snubbing that I highly recommend. All the way back in 1994, Ebert called it "one of the best films about American life" he'd ever seen. I completely agree. See it.
