Review of Hoop Dreams (1994) by Nat M — 15 Mar 2008
There are only two documentaries that I've seen that I really love. One of them is "Bowling for Columbine", and while it's very funny and well done, my true favorite documentary has to be "Hoop Dreams".
It's epic, lasting almost three hours, and it never gets boring. You can't help but root for the two kids, but at the same time, you know you've never heard their names before, and because of that, you know what's coming in the end.
It's just a really sad story that is captured by the filmmakers beautifully. It almost flows like it's an actual movie, because the narrative is so clear and concise, not filled with stupid random details.
Just the straight up facts of what happened and why. It also makes me think of how hard life is for a lot of people, even in America, and how hard they have to work to get out of it. "Hoop Dreams" is amazing, and if you want to see a great documentary, it's the definite choice for you.
