Review of Hoop Dreams (1994) by Chris W — 02 Jul 2008
One of my top 10 favorite movies of all times. Watching it again tonight, I'm struck by how rich and deep this movie is. It's not a movie about basketball but about how the love of baketball and dream of playing in the NBA keeps two young boys from inner-city Chicago focused.
Director Steve James followed the two for five years and captures an amazing story full of setbacks, successes, tragedies and triumphs. It's an amazing look at the American dream, the challenges faced by inner-city Americans, racism, families and hope.
This is one of the few movies I think everyone must see once in their lives--don't let the 3 hour run time deter you: the story is so gripping and the film so engaging that it passes by like nothing.
See this movie.
