Review of Hoop Dreams (1994) by Jack G — 06 Feb 2010
I've rarely cared about basketball, but this made me give a shit. It's about the people, and in three hours we get to see them, and their families, as they grow and things change. It also, perhaps without really knowing it's doing it, emphasizing something about life in America, as well as sports, that's paramount: luck, or lack thereof.
You care about where luck will take them, since William and Arthur are good kids who love playing basketball, and are just a shred of an inch away from getting out of the ghetto. It's inspiring without having to force it, which is rare in documentaries.
